Beach camping is free but if you use a ferry to get there you have to pay to ride it. You can take a vehicle (4WD recommended) or walk on the ferry and leave the vehicle on mainland. Taking a vehicle is expensive and reservations with one of the private ferry services is required. Ice and gasoline are available for purchase on the island but nothing else. NPS rents cabins also. There are no paved roads on the island. <br /><br />9/23: If you take a vehicle to the island you are required to buy a permit. This can be done on recreation.gov and your sticker will be issued on the island.
